Recently I interviewed Director Fergle Gibson, and Executive producer Luke Morgan-Rowe about the upcoming independent fan film ; Max Payne : Payne and Redemption. Paynereactor had the honor to interview them for a second time, along with three exclusive shots of the actors starring in the film! Read on.
Patrick: How is the film progressing?
Fergle: We're progressing at a pretty steady rate at the moment, awaiting confirmation from our DP on the location. Once that's done, we'll be able to arrange shooting dates with everyone involved, which we expect to be during the summer, this year.
Patrick: Has any footage from the film already been shot?
Fergle: Well, I could lie, but I won't. So no. No footage from the film has been shot.
Patrick: Has any of the film's score already been recorded?
Fergle: Justin R. Durban and I have been in constant communication, discussing various ideas for the score, and he has come up with some samples, but understandably can't score the film until he has seen the finished product.
Patrick: Why have things been so quiet recently?
Fergle: I think I'll let Sir Executive Producer answer this one...
Luke: The main rate limiting step thus far has been finding an appropriate location. It has taken us since December last year to come up with just one viable suggestion, which, as mentioned before, our DP has yet to confirm. Everything else is ready to go, and I've been keeping everyone updated on the blog.
Patrick: How do you deal with certain issues, such as being unable to set up meetings because of busy schedules, etc?
Fergle: A porch, rocking chair, loaded shotgun, and a large bottle of whiskey in a paper bag... then I wait for the unsuspecting tourists to walk by.
Luke: That has probably been the most difficult thing so far, and this is probably because no one is being paid to work on the shoot. However, everyone involved has bent over backwards to find the time in their busy schedules to meet with us, although what with my constant nagging phone calls, I don't think they like me all that much anymore.
Patrick: Are you going to make the planned release date, or will it most likely be pushed back?
Luke: So far, we're still on target, but reserve the right to change the date if circumstances must.
Patrick: Can you tell us a little about the story at all?
Fergle: We're keeping the story under lock and key until the film is released.
Patrick: Will Nigel Billing be the voice as well as the face of Max Payne? Or will you be using a voice over artist like in the games?
Fergle: Nigel Billing will be both the voice and face of Max Payne in Payne & Redemption. Originally, just in case the actor couldn't hack the accent, we contemplated hiring a voice over impressionist to re-dub over the voice of whichever actor we got to play Max Payne, but on casting Nigel Billing, discovered Nigel could do a more than convincing impression, albeit in his own style.
Patrick: Is the film being recorded in a studio or a real-life environment?
Fergle: We debated many ideas about where to shoot, but eventually decided that a real-life location would be the best option.
Patrick: Will the effects in the film be mostly CG or real-life effects?
Fergle: I have to admit, I'm a little oldschool. I'm not a fan of CG...
Luke: *Coughs* Bollocks...
Fergle: At least, not in the amount it's used in movies today. I feel it detracts from reality, disconnects you from the characters and surroundings, and just generally makes you feel as if you're watching a very well made computer game. With Payne & Redemption, real-life effects will be used wherever possible, but there are some situations, either due to budget or practicality, where CG is just the only answer.
Patrick: Are we going to see Mona Sax or any other famous characters from the Max Payne games?
Fergle: In Part III? No... But in the other parts? Well, you'll just have to wait and see.
Patrick: Have you had any feedback on the film, production-wise, thus far?
Fergle: We've had many encouraging e-mails from Max Payne fans all around the world, and I already have a German stalker called "Linus".
Patrick: How do you see the future of this film?
Fergle: In a crystal ball...
Patrick: What keeps you and your crew motivated through the rough times?
Fergle: Knowing we'll have an awesome film by the end of it all. As for my crew, I've not a clue... I'm surprised they haven't shot themselves by now.
Luke: Beer and cocaine.
Patrick: When will some media from the film be released?
Fergle: Fans of the upcoming Duke Nukem game will know the answer to that... But seeing as you guys have waited a while, here's a little something to whet your appetite...
